Here’s the part that surprises people: a saltwater pool still uses chlorine. It just makes its own. A device called a salt cell (or salt chlorine generator) turns the dissolved salt in your water into a steady, gentle stream of chlorine automatically, around the clock. Here’s what happens inside that cell. Electrically charged plates split the salt water passing through them, and three things come out. Chlorine, which sanitizes. Hydrogen gas, which vents harmlessly to the air. And sodium hydroxide, which stays.
Sodium hydroxide is caustic soda. It’s the same thing sold in a jug at the pool store to raise pH on purpose. So you have a machine on your equipment pad quietly adding a base to your water every hour it runs. It’s gradual. It also never stops and never reverses.
That’s the whole reason a salt pool needs acid on a schedule, and it’s why “my pH keeps going up and I don’t know why” is the single most common thing we hear from salt pool owners.
It costs you twice if you let it run. Chlorine gets weaker as pH rises, so the cell has to work longer to hold the same sanitizer level. What the Salt Is Actually Doing
We said above that salt is mildly corrosive. That’s true and it’s also vague, so here’s the specific version.
First, how much salt we’re talking about. A salt pool runs around 3,000 parts per million. Getting there takes at least 250 pounds of salt per 10,000 gallons, so a typical 15,000-gallon pool needs somewhere around nine or ten 40-pound bags on day one. Worth knowing when you’re reading a conversion quote.
Second, and this is the part that surprises people: salt barely moves your water balance at all. Dissolved solids are one of five inputs to the calculation that decides whether your water deposits calcium or eats your surfaces. Going from a fresh-fill pool to a salt pool shifts that calculation about one tenth of a point toward the corrosive side, and then it stops. A pool at 6,000 ppm is no further along than one at 3,000.
One tenth is small. Your pH and your calcium hardness are much bigger terms in the same equation, and they’re the ones that actually cause damage. So where is the real risk? It’s electrical, not chemical.
Saltier water conducts electricity better. When a pool has different metals sharing that water, a copper heat exchanger inside your heater, a metal light fixture housing, a metal impeller, handrails, ladder anchors, the better-conducting water makes it easier for a small current to run between them. One metal slowly gives itself up to protect the other. The tell isn’t a hole. It’s staining or discoloration turning up on metal parts, often a copper color showing up somewhere stainless.
The defense is proper bonding and grounding at the equipment pad. That’s an electrical detail, not a chemistry problem, and you can’t balance your way around it. It’s one of the things we look at before we quote a conversion, and it’s why we care what’s already on your pad.
The EPA groups all of this together in its secondary drinking water standards, where dissolved solids, chloride, and pH all sit under the same heading for corrosion and staining. Same chemistry, much larger pipes.
One last thing, because it will save you money. The rule of thumb for when water is too old to keep is when dissolved solids climb about 1,500 ppm above where the pool started. On a salt pool, “where it started” already includes the salt your cell needs. So your pool begins that count at 3,000-plus, not at zero. If someone tells you your salt pool needs draining because the total dissolved solids read 3,400, that’s a normal reading for a salt pool and not a reason to dump 15,000 gallons.
The thing people forget: the salt cell
Your salt cell is the heart of the system, and it doesn’t last forever. Most cells run 3 to 7 years before they need replacing, usually $300 to $700 depending on the model.
