What the White Line Actually Is
Water evaporates. The minerals in it do not. They stay behind, concentrate, and eventually drop out of solution as calcium carbonate at the line where the surface sits. South Florida loses a lot of water to evaporation and the supply here is mineral heavy to start with, which is why the line builds noticeably faster than it does in most of the country. The USGS hardness data puts Florida firmly in the hard water band.
Fresh scale is white and chalky. Older scale turns gray or brown, and people assume that is a different problem. It is not. Scale forms with a rough surface, and rough surfaces collect dirt, sunscreen and body oils. What you are looking at is the same calcium with a few years of grime bonded into it.
The grout line is the part that actually matters. Grout is porous where the tile is not, so it holds those oils, and oily residue is a nutrient base for algae. Algae in a pool very often starts in the grout at the waterline rather than on the floor. Cleaning the tile line is partly cosmetic and partly removing the thing that feeds the problem.
Raised spas, spillways and sheer descents scale first. Moving water evaporates faster, so the mineral concentrates quicker at those features than anywhere else in the pool.
Why You Cannot Scrub It Off
Pool tile has a glazed, non-porous finish. That glaze is the entire reason tile survives sitting in chemically treated water for decades.
Anything abrasive takes it off. Steel brushes, scouring pads, pumice stones, the wire wheel somebody on a forum recommended. Once the glaze is gone the tile is permanently rougher, and a rough surface scales faster and holds dirt harder than the original ever did. A bad cleaning does not just fail. It makes every future cleaning worse.
Acid is the other route people try. It works on the calcium, and it also attacks the grout, which is cement and gives way long before the tile does. You end up with clean tile and soft grout.
Pressure washers meant for driveways and siding will crack tile, blow out grout lines and chip coping.
One more thing worth knowing if you do buy a tile cleaner off the shelf. Check the label and make sure it contains no phosphates. Phosphate is algae food. Cleaning your tile with something that feeds algae is a poor trade.

How to Make It Come Back Slower
Scale is a water chemistry problem before it is a cleaning problem, and there is a number that tells you which way your water is heading.
It is called the saturation index, and it combines pH, total alkalinity, calcium hardness and water temperature into one figure:
- Below -0.4: corrosive. The water is pulling calcium out of your plaster and grout.
- -0.3 to +0.3: balanced. This is where you want to sit.
- +0.4 and above: scaling. Calcium is coming out of solution onto your tile and your heater right now.
If your pool runs above +0.4 the line comes back within months no matter how well it was cleaned. Hold it in range and a good clean lasts a year or more.
Most pools around here drift toward the scaling side, because the fill water is already hard and evaporation concentrates it further. It is manageable, but it needs watching, and that is part of what weekly pool service is for.
One caution if you adjust it yourself. The order matters. Total alkalinity first, then pH, then calcium hardness. Move them out of sequence and you spend the afternoon chasing your own corrections around.
How Often Pool Tile Needs Cleaning
Every twelve to eighteen months for most pools in West Palm Beach and Palm Beach County. Sooner if any of the following apply:

- Water balance running on the scaling side of the index
