LED Retrofit Into Your Existing Niche, No Draining

Here’s the part people love. In most cases we retrofit a new LED straight into the housing you already have, with your pool still full.

That works because of how the fixture was built. Almost every residential pool in Florida uses a wet niche, which is a housing set into the pool wall with the light sitting in it, surrounded by pool water. The cord on a wet-niche fixture is deliberately made long enough that the light can be unscrewed and lifted out onto the deck for service without touching the water level. That’s the design, not a workaround. It’s the reason a lighting upgrade is usually a single visit rather than a project.

The other kind, a dry niche, sits behind a sealed window in the wall and is serviced from outside the pool. You’ll see those on some commercial installs. Almost never on a backyard pool.

One correction worth making while we’re here, because you’ll read the opposite on plenty of websites. Not every pool light is low voltage. The standard residential pool light for decades was a 120-volt, 300 to 500 watt incandescent or halogen fixture. Twelve-volt fixtures running off a transformer are common in newer work, but if your pool is older, there’s a good chance yours is line voltage. It changes what we check before we touch anything, and it changes what the circuit is required to have on it.

While the fixture is out, we check the seal where the light meets the niche. There should be no crevice between the two. A gap there isn’t cosmetic wear, it’s a defect.

Bonding, Grounding, and Why This Is Licensed Electrical Work

We’ll say the direct thing first. Pool lighting is licensed electrical work. Not because we’d like it to be, and not as a way of talking you out of a weekend project. Because of what the failure mode is.

Two words get used as if they mean the same thing, and they don’t.

Grounding gives a fault current a low-resistance path back to earth. If something shorts, the current goes to ground instead of going somewhere it shouldn’t. Code requires it on electrical equipment within five feet of the pool wall, on anything tied to the circulation system, on junction boxes, on transformer enclosures, and on the underwater light itself.

Bonding is a different job. It ties every piece of metal around the pool to the same electrical potential with a solid copper conductor, so there’s no voltage difference between two things a person can touch at the same time. The list is longer than people expect: the reinforcing steel in the shell and the deck, ladders and handrails, the pump motor, the underwater lighting, and any fixed metal within five feet of the pool wall.

Here’s why that second one exists. The classic injury is one hand on a metal ladder and one foot against the metal ring of a faulty light. If those two sit at different potentials, the person in between them is the path. Bonding removes the difference, so there’s nothing to conduct.

And there’s a version that doesn’t involve touching metal at all. A defective underwater light can put a charge into the water itself. Somebody swimming in it who then touches a grounded object can be shocked without ever having gone near the fixture.

Which brings us to the GFCI. It compares the current going into a circuit with the current coming back. When the difference hits about 5 milliamperes, it cuts the power. For a sense of where that number came from: current through the chest at around 18 milliamperes is enough to contract the chest muscles and stop someone breathing. The GFCI is set to trip at well under a third of that, and it trips fast.

So if your pool light trips the GFCI, please don’t keep resetting it. That’s the device doing precisely the thing it was installed to do. The CPSC’s guidance on electrical safety in and around pools is worth two minutes of anyone’s time, including the part about what a tingle in the water actually means and why you get out without grabbing the metal ladder.

If Your Pool Is Older Than About Thirty Years

Then it’s worth knowing this before you spend anything.

GFCI protection on underwater lighting circuits has not always been required. Pools older than roughly thirty years frequently don’t have it. Spas are worse. The code provision covering them only took effect in 1981, so even a spa that looks reasonably current can be sitting on an unprotected circuit.

Palm Beach County is full of pools from the seventies, eighties and nineties. A lot of them have a 120-volt light on a circuit with no ground-fault protection, and the owner has no reason to know it. Nothing about the pool looks wrong. The light works.

The current code requires GFCI on any underwater lighting fixture operating at more than 15 volts, which covers every 120-volt fixture out there.

Here’s the practical part. The light replacement is the cheapest moment you will ever get to fix this. The circuit is already open, the fixture is already out, and the electrician is already standing there. Doing it as its own job later costs considerably more. If you have an attached spa on the same equipment pad, we look at that circuit too.

We check this on every older pool we quote. If your circuit is already protected, we’ll tell you and you’ll have spent nothing. If it isn’t, you get a number before we start, and it’s yours to decide.
